An open architecture represents the best business value for any organization. It is not a design, nor does it favor any implementation. From a business perspective, its goal is to foster change, not to obstruct it. In an open and flexible infrastructure, developers can readily experiment with new applications, services and technologies. Those qualities are valuable to both enterprise and carrier network operators. The idea of open architectures already guides the network design and management of most enterprises, and of some carriers. Their network architects select products and services from the marketplace that help the organization use technology to meet business needs (e.g. make money, save money or obtain a competitive advantage). That generally means they evaluate existing, available technologies to determine which ones best satisfy their economic, migration, marketplace, complexity, ease of management, and ease of use considerations.
