摘要

Why, when presented with a seat facing theirs and whatever the weather, does anyone under 35 promptly rest their feet on it? As this is the generation that socialises sitting in the gutter, I suppose it's no surprise, but why do manufacturers keep putting seats there for such abuse? Who wants to sit on them afterwards? And why do many over 35 wait until they see the whites of the driver's eyes before getting their money out? Here's a story from Harleston in Norfolk that may amuse. A gentleman first gets his dog on to the bus and then himself. He then gets his pass out, shows it, puts it away again, then gets out his money, pays, gets change, puts change away, gets ticket, puts ticket away ― and only then goes and sits down. As he pays, a passer-by stops lo exchange pleasantries with him and then another acquaintance inside the bus. Not hearing her reply, he sticks his head in and quite a jolly conversation ensues. 'I'm going in a minute,' says the driver quietly.
