A commonly held perception is that trolleybuses were easier to drive than motorbuses, and that this was one factor behind the replacement of many British tram systems with trolleybuses in the 1930s. Read these memoirs of Charlie Wyatt, a most articulate former driver and conductor on London Transport's trolleybus service - in its day the largest in the world - and be prepared at very least to challenge that perception. Yes, motorbuses had gears to change but in many ways the trolleybus driver's was the more challenging job. Besides steering a longer vehicle than most contemporary motorbuses in heavy traffic, there was another road to watch: the one above, the wires connecting these electric buses to their power supply.
