A local campaign has been launched to try and halt the planned demolition of a rare late-1920s for London Transport Country Area bus garage in Hitchin. Developers and architects have lodged plans to demolish the building — once LT garage HI, which closed in 1959 — on the corner of Bridge Street and Park Street in the north Hertfordshire town and build a three-storey block with 12 flats. The Hitchin Forum's planning group says this fails to recognise the historic significance of one of the few surviving LT Country Area garages and would replace one of the characterful and quirky buildings in the town centre with 'anytown architecture dressed up with the usual details drawn from a catalogue of bland non-distinctiveness'.
