The Commer Avenger, introduced in 1948, was of forward control layout but unusual in having its 4.75litre petrol engine inclined at an angle of 66deg from the vertical, thus taking up less space and permitting seating to the left of the driver. In all, more than 600 were sold on the home market, mostly as coaches, and Plaxton bodied over one third of them, but many of the smaller coachbuilding companies also built bodies for the Avenger. Myers & Bowman of Distington, Cumberland was a postwar coachbuilder and a Rootes dealer, and as such - as Commer was the Rootes Group commercial vehicle brand - built almost exclusively on Commer chassis under the name Cumberland Coachwork. It produced eight bodies for Avenger chassis, but none so strange as that on KAO 141 for Sowerby's Tours of Gilsland, Cumberland in 1950, as 16 of its 28 seats faced forward and 12 backwards.
