Great expectations

Double-deck buses - especially the red London variety - stand along with uniformed guardsmen, Beefeaters, the Big Ben clock tower, Tower Bridge and black taxis as instantly recognisable symbols of Britain. So it was natural that when the UK government devised its Great Britain campaign to promote the country internationally as a destination for trade, tourism, investment and education, the world tour should involve a red London double-decker. And with such high-profile figures involved in parts of the campaign as Mayor of London Boris Johnson, it was surely inevitable that the bus would be the one he has commissioned: the Wright New Bus for London 'Borismaster' now referred to by Transport for London as the New Routemaster.
