The picture of the restored Unicar GT80-bodied Bedford YMT in the Fleet in Focus feature on Paul S. Winson in October 2017 Buses had me thinking about what else the Spanish coachbuilder had bodied for the UK. For that, we must go back to the autumn of 1978 when it was announced that coach bodies built by Union Carrocera, i.e Unicar, at ITS works in Catoira, in the region of Galicia, north-west Spain, were to be sold here via sole concessionaire Moseley Group (PSV). The first production examples, on Bedford YMT chassis, entered service in the spring of 1979, with more than 80 appearing between then and early 1981. In addition to these, there were also 18 GT80 bodies built for the UK on 11m and 12m Volvo B58 chassis, but the rarest of all was GMC 556V, which despite the General Motors connotations of its registration, was uniquely a front-engined Ford R1114 and not a Bedford.
