The vehicle shown here in a photograph from my own collection, CFU 34, is a Daimler CWA6 fitted with a wartime Brush utility body and supplied to Cleethorpes Corporation, where it entered service in February 1944. So what is remarkable about that, when Brush bodied around 450 Daimler CWA6, CWG5 and CWD6 chassis between 1943 and 1946?The answer is that the vehicle, when new, had a standard 55-seat lowbridge body, but in 1947 this was rebuilt as a highbridge 51-seater by the corporation - work that involved increasing the height of the top deck structure, removing the offside sunken gangway and replacing the original, and awkward, four-abreast bench seats with conventional seating in pairs, separated by a central gangway. Evidence of this change of height can be seen clearly in the vertical band of panelling immediately above the driver's cab and likewise at the rear.
