Brian Deans, Glasgow trolleybus expert

Brian Deans, author of several books about Glasgow's trolleybuses and widely acknowledged to be the greatest expert on the UK's last new and third largest system, died on 10 September aged 71. He was just 19 when the then Scottish Tramway Museum Society published the first of his books in September 1966, as the system - the only one started after World War 2 - was being wound down for closure the following May. This was a comprehensive history, tracing the story from putative plans being mooted for trolleybuses in 1921, inter-war plans, their introduction in April 1949, expansion to eight separately numbered routes by November 1958 and contraction that began as early as May 1959.
