A NEW CANAL BETWEEN ZEEBRUGGE AND ITS HINTERLAND IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE ACTUAL INADEQUATE INLAND WATERWAY CONNECTION

Le port de Zeebrugge est l'un des seuls ports européens à grand tirant d'eau, situé sur la côte de la Mer du Nord qui est équipé pour recevoir les générations actuelles et futures de grands porte-conteneurs, vraquiers, navires rouliers et navires pour marchandises conventionnelles. La qualité de la fonction distributive d'un port est largement déterminée par ses connexions avec l'arrière-pays. Entre 1980 et 1998 le trafic maritime dans le port de Zeebrugge a doublé. Pendant la même période, le transport fluvial est descendu à 0,3 mio de tonnes en 1998. La part du transport fluvial dans le port de Zeebrugge est très limitée. En 1998 elle s'élevait à 1% du trafic maritime, comparé à environ 50% à Anvers et plus de 60% au port de Gand. Cela montre que les connexions fluviales entre Zeebrugge et son arrière-pays sont insuffisantes. Ces travaux ne constitueraient cependant qu'une solution temporaire, limitée et intermédiaire.%The port of Zeebrugge is one of the few deepsea ports in Europe located right on the North Sea, able to receive the present and future generation of mega-container carriers, bulk carriers, roll-on, roll-off and general cargo vessels. The following activities are developed in the port: 1. Intra-European roll-on, roll-off liner services are provided to a large number of ports in Europe (Great Britain, Scandinavia, the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa). Total roll-on, roll-off traffic reached 14.4 million tonnes in 1998. 2. Traffic and distribution of new cars : all major car manufacturers in Europe are using the port for the exchange of spare parts and components, for distribution of cars to the European dealers, to overseas markets and as a transhipment port between shortsea and deepsea trades. The overall figure is 770,558 units for 1998. Because of this, Zeebrugge is consolidating its place on the European ranking list as reshipment port for new cars. 3. The traffic of other general cargo (various agricultural and food products such as fresh fruit, meat, fish, dairy products, sugar, potatoes, cereals and animal fodder) showed a decline in some sections after a strong upward move in the past years. 4. Zeebrugge is equipped to handle the large container ships of the "6,000 TEU and beyond" generation. The port has a lock-free access to the container berths with a guaranteed waterdepth of 52 feet (a programme to ensure a 55 feet access channel is on its way). The first 4,229 TEU ships made their entry in Zeebrugge in 1996. The port handled 776,357 TEU in 1998. 5. The port is a landing port for dry bulk cargoes : the depth in the access channel and the deepwater quay make it possible to receive large bulk carriers which offer economies of scale. 6. General cargoes, forest products and heavy lifts can be handled at specialised multi-purpose terminals. 7. The gas industry has developed an extensive infrastructure in Zeebrugge and is making provisions for further extensions. The port of Zeebrugge handled 4.8 million tonnes of liquid products (3.1 million tonnes liquefied natural gas) in 1998.
