Data accumulated over several years strongly indicate that geothermal heat pumps are an attractive technical and financial option for new and renovated school buildings. Also known as ground-coupled heat pumps, or GeoExchange systems, geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) work by moving heat to or from the earth, and are very efficient because the temperature of the earth is relatively constant year round. There are currently over 400 schools in the United States with GHP systems. The bar chart below indicates the states with the greatest number.
