On May 2, Ormat Technologies, Inc. (Sparks, NV) celebrated the groundbreaking and dedication of a new 10-megawatt (MW) geothermal power plant at the Heber Geothermal Complex in southern California. The new facility is dedicated to William R. Gould, who served as chairman of Southern California Edison (SCE) from 1980 through 1984, and was a driving force behind many of California's renewable energy programs. The new William R. Gould geothermal power plant is part of an 18-MW enhancement at Heber, including an 8-MW addi- tion to existing facilities, which supply power to SCE under ongoing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Under those contacts, electricity is provided to Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA) members, including Anaheim, Glendale, Pasadena, and Banning. Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) earned by the project will assist SCPPA member compliance with California Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirements.
