Dr. Kalina was asked the history of his invention for power plants, known as the Kalina Cycle. He said, "The idea of the Kalina Cycle first came to me in Russia, 35 to 37 years ago. I immigrated to the US 30 years ago and started to work on it like a hobby without thought of commercial value. I then met with Dr. Myron Tribus from MIT. He said the idea was practical, so I started to develop the Kalina Cycle.rn"The principle is this. In every cycle of a power plant, until now, the same working fluid is used throughout the entire power-plant system. In the Kalina Cycle there is a mixture of two components, like water and ammonia (this is best, but other combinations are possible). The ratio between the water and the ammonia is the key, for it varies in different parts of the system. Thus, in the boiler the composition is different from what it is in the condenser. This allows us to do things that are impossible in the simple Rankine Cycle. The net result is around 25% to 30% of extra efficiency," Dr. Kalina concluded.
