The Mount Shasta News, on April 30, said the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rejected in early April five lease applications for geothermal development on the slopes of California's Mt. Shasta, from Whitney Creek to Military Pass. The leases would have covered about 9,500 acres of national-forest land and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rejection was based on the non-concurrence of the US Forest Service. In January 2008, the Forest Service notified the BLM that geothermal development would produce "adverse impacts to cultural and historical values."
