A Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation was issued on May 9 by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the most optimistic scenario, the report says close to 80% of the world's energy supply could be met by renewables (bio-energy, direct-solar, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, and wind) by 2050—if backed by correct public policies. The report says the proportion of renewable energy will most likely increase even without enabling policies, but past experiences have shown the largest increases will come with concerted policy efforts.
