On February 13, President Obama released his FY 2013 budget request to Congress for the US Department of Energy (DOE)-a proposed allotment of $272 billion. Of the amount, $2.27 billion is for the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). The funds were requested to further EERE goals, including a 28% reduction of federal greenhouse-gas emissions by 2020 (using a 2008 base). Highlights include $120 million to support energy-frontier research centers and $140 million for five existing energy-innovation hubs-and a new hub established to focus on grid systems and the ties between transmission and distribution systems.
