A Warming Climate for Geothermal?

I got to enjoy the freezing temperatures in Washington DC a few weeks ago while attending several geothermal meetings with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other agencies. Doug Hollett, recently promoted to DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary of Renewable Power and Energy Efficiency, called a meeting to discuss his 2016 Financial Year (FY) proposed budget. The FY 2015 enacted geothermal budget is $55 million and the FY 2016 requested budget is $96 million. We are grateful for this dramatic increase. However all the other renewable technologies will receive substantially larger allocations if the proposed budget is passed. The major renewable industries were represented at the meeting and it was good for geothermal energy have a seat at the table.
