It is by now an ecological truism that the world is scale dependent. Our perception of patterns and their underlying processes are strongly tied to the scale or scales at which we make our observations. Researchers working in many branches of ecology have grown comfortable with this complication, but those of us who work on coral reefs have only recently begun to put ideas about scale into practice.
