Il retrace l'historique des marques maritimes sud-africaines, dont les premières ont été implantées par des marins portugais au 15ème siècle. Des changements successifs ont abouti à la création de Portnet en 1999, de l'autorité nationale portuaire d'Afrique du Sud en 2002 et plus récemment, en 2007, de l'actuelle Transnet National Ports Authority.%Bartholomeus Diaz is generally credited with being the first mariner to round the Cape. This is not correct, however, as the first record of Africa being circumnavigated appears in the work of the Greek historian Herodotus who describes how Pharoah Necho in the year 595 BC despatched several ships manned by Phoenician seamen, with orders to sail southward, round Africa, or Libya as it was then called, and return to Egypt by way of the Pillars of Hercules, now known as the Straits of Gibraltar. This they accomplished in three years, no doubt with the assistance of the Mozambique and Agulhas currents as they sailed southward and the Benguella current after they had rounded the Cape.
