New Honorary Personal Member James Collocott

Lors de sa 49ème réunion à Marseille le Conseil de l'AISM a unanimement décidé d'accorder à James Collocott, de PORTNET (Afrique du Sud), la qualité de membre honoraire de l'AISM, en reconnaissance de son implication dans les travaux de l'Association. Né en 1952 en Afrique du Sud, il y fait des études techniques qui le conduisent chez un employeur unique, TRANSNET, anciennement South African Railways and Harbours - SARAH, puis South African Transport Services. James rejoint SARAH en 1971 où il travaille d'abord au service de télécommunications, avant d'être transféré au service des phares en 1977. Il y achève sa carrière en tant que directeur du support technique pour le service des phares, responsible de tous les aspects techniques des aides à la navigation d'Afrique du Sud et membre du comité de gestion des phares. On se souviendra de lui pour le r?le particulièrement important qu'il a joué dans l'organisation de la 17ème Conférence de l'AISM au Cap, en mars de cette année. Il a pris part aux 6 Conférences qui se sont déroulées depuis Veldhoven en 1990 et a été élu Vice-président de l'Association en 2006. Sa participation aux travaux de l'AISM a commencé au sein de la Commission des aides radioélectriques, pour se poursuivre avec la Commission EEP jusqu'en 2003 où il est appelé à siéger au Conseil. Il a représenté le service des phares sud-africains dans un grand nombre d'instances régionales, traitant notamment des aides à la navigation dans les eaux du Kenya, du Malawi, du Mozambique et de la Tanzanie. En 2009 il est expert en phares pour l'ouvrage Lighthouses of South Africa (ISBN 978 1 919939 51 3). Enfin, James Collocott répond à l'honneur qui lui est fait en affirmant que ce lui fut un grand privilège que de contribuer à la vie de l'AISM pendant tant d'années.%At the 49th Meeting of the IALA Council in Marseilles it was unanimously agreed to confer Honorary Personal Membership on James Collocott of PORTNET South Africa in recognition of his outstanding support to IALA. Born in 1952 he was educated at Touwsrivier High School and Cape Technikon in Cape Town where he obtained a National Diploma for Technicians (Engineering). He commenced employment with South African Railways and Harbours in 1971 in the Telecommunications Department in Cape Town as a Pupil Engineering Assistant. After obtaining an Engineering Diploma in 1976 he was appointed the following year as an Engineering Assistant with the Lighthouse Service's Division that was then part of the Signals and Telecommunications Department. He was responsible for diesel/alternator, optical and harbour control panels as well as repairing faulty equipment and creating smaller designs of control equipment. Following promotion as Senior Engineering Assistant in 1982 he was responsible for planning, design and testing of all control equipment, its commissioning and purchase. Five years later on the decentralisation of the Lighthouse Services in South Africa and following the death of his controlling office, the retirement of the lighthouse engineer and the resignation of his successor, James became responsible for all technical aspects of the Lighthouse Services.
