SANTO ANTONIO DA BARRA LIGHTHOUSE IALA HERITAGE LIGHTHOUSE OF THE YEAR 2020!

The accolade of IALA Heritage Lighthouse of the Year 2020 has been conferred by Council upon Santo Antonio da Barra Lighthouse. This stunning lighthouse forms part of a fort in the city of Salvador, Brazil. The original tower of the lighthouse at this site dated back to 1 698 and so lays a claim to being the oldest lighthouse site in the Americas. However, it was not only the lighthouse's antiquity that led to it being recognised in this, the second year of the accolade. Santo Antonio da Barra Lighthouse was commended for: 1. Its excellent public access with a Museum of Hydrography and Navigation containing (amongst other things) artefacts from the very shipwreck of 1668 that led to the establishment of the lighthouse.
