RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BAJO PICAMILLO BEACON TOWER

At the start of February 2017, a powerful Atlantic storm was forming northwest of the coast of Galicia, in the northwest corner of Spain. While such a storm is by no means abnormal during winter, on this occasion the rapidly decreasing atmospheric pressure in the eye of the storm and the fast displacement in easterly direction indicated an unusual behaviour for this kind of atmospheric disturbance. These two characteristics caused an exceptionally high level of waves across the northwest tip and the northern cornice of the Iberian Peninsula, with hurricane category winds (NW-W sustained winds of 60 knots and gusts up to 80 knots) causing numerous incidents and serious damage in all areas affected.
