As would be expected, for many years the International Society of Rock Mechanics have led the way in producing a set of suggested methods for the use in rock mechanics. The effort by Ted Brown in 1981 in producing the Yellow/ Orange Book entitled "Rock characterization, testing and monitoring" was appreciated by everyone with any connection with rock engineering. I can honestly say that my copy was taken from the shelf at least once a month. However, as the years went by and other Suggested Methods were produced, it became almost an irritant in having to ensure the additional ones were copied and filed away.
