First International Student Obtains His PhD at CAS

Mr. Ghulam Rasul, the first international student formally enrolled by the Graduate University of CAS (GUCAS) has received his PhD degree this summer after having passed his dissertation defense on May 21 at the CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP). Jointly supported by CAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) and the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), Mr. Ghulam Rasul came to IAP as a visiting scholar in 2000. He was admitted into GSCAS as the first international PhD candidate in its history in 2001 when the school was accredited to enroll foreign students. Under the instruction of his mentors, Prof. Zeng Qingcun, a CAS member, and Prof. Zhao Sixiong, a celebrated scientist in disastrous weather research, Mr. Rasul worked hard on a project on Diagnostic Analysis and Numerical Simulation of Disastrous Weather in South Asian Summer Monsoon.
