On the afternoon of 21 December, 2006, Uli Schwarz, professor emeritus of the German Max Planck Society (MPG) and founding director of the CAS Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies (SIAS), died in his homeland after failing to respond to medical treatment. "I was utterly shocked at the news, and I was so sad that I couldn't sleep that night," said WANG Tai'an, deputy director of the former Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology (SICB, now merged with the Institute of Biochemistry) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), at a memorial meeting held at the Shanghai Science Park in honor of the deceased.
