One upshot of the slow recovery from recession in the heartlands of the US is that the Great Lakes transport artery endured a decade of relative neglect. But, with US industry limbering into shape - and infrastructure and industrial renewal at the top of Washington's agenda - America's 'fourth coast' is promoting its benefits. In 2016, a conference of Great Lakes governors - with Ontario and Quebec peers - set its bar for the decade at doubling maritime trade and bolstering its industrial core.
