China offers promise for SA coal

Coal exports from South Africa continue to spiral downwards, partly because of the global economic fallout from the COV-ID-19 pandemic, but also because of transport capacity problems in the country itself. Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has struggled to provide sufficient rail capacity to the country's main coal export facility, Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT). China has unexpectedly re-emerged as an important market, driving up demand for South African coal but the Chinese Government's new pledge on greenhouse gas emissions has put the entire industry's long-term future in doubt.
