Queensland-based rail network owner and above-rail service operator Aurizon has finally reached agreement with coal producer customers after a drawn-out fight over access and maintenance fees. The dispute erupted in late 2017 when the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) issued a draft ruling substantially reducing the amount Aurizon was permitted to earn from owning and maintaining the Central Queensland Coal Network. The QCA decreed the maximum Aurizon could earn for the period from July 2017 to June 2021 was A$3.9B, meaning, amongst other things, that Aurizon was forced to repay monies already collected.
