SMM, the St Petersburg-based producer of heavy-duty handling equipment, has seen a dramatic increase in demand for its machinery as Russia seeks to expand the capacity of its seaports. Russia's UCL Holding (UCLH) has acquired a number of SMM-manufactured Vityaz portal cranes for its operations on the Russian Baltic and Black Sea coasts. The UCLH-controlled Seaport of St Petersburg (MPSP) has put into service two Vityaz cranes since the beginning of the year, according to its chief mechanic Vitaly Zavolovsky. With individual lifting capacities of 40t and 32m booms, the fully revolving electric cranes are designed to handle all types of cargo using grabs, hooks, magnets and spreaders.
