The volume of dry bulk cargo being moved on the Great Lakes continues to show improvement, largely because of a continuing expansion of regional steel production in both the US and Canada. This has been generating moderate increases in the amounts of iron ore, coal and limestone being transported on the Lakes. At the same time, increased volumes of imported steel are helping US and Canadian grain exporters remain competitive by providing cheap backhaul tonnage, particularly for moves to Europe and North Africa.
