Zeeland Ports (ZP) has maintained its growth trend but remains unconvinced that a capesize lock, as wanted by Ghent, would benefit it much. ZP, comprising Terneuzen, on the south bank of the Scheldt estuary, and Vlissingen on the north bank, recorded increased coal tonnages in 2005, mainly through Ovet, which has operations in both ports. Total coal throughput at the two ports increased to 4.05MT and while this is only marginally over the 2004 performance of 3.98MT, it was better than forecast in light of a loss of some cargo opportunities.
