When handling high volumes of dry bulk commodities such as coal and ore it is not possible to produce entirely consistent and repeatable 'bias-free' samples. However, all international sampling standards provide precise limits within which systems can be considered to be free from bias. A sampling system that can be operated with a minimum of staff, is mechanically reliable and produces consistently low bias within the acceptable limits while at the same time providing automatic identification of samples would be the aim of most organisations dealing with large throughputs of bulk material.
