Esperance wins Cashmere

Western Australian ore mining newcomer Cashmere Iron has signed a deal to ship its Mid-West direct shipping ore through the southern port of Esperance rather than closer Geraldton. The decision appears to be based on better rail links: the Cashmere Downs deposit, located in the Yilgarn region 700 km northeast of Perth, is also 510 km east of Geraldton and 585 km north of Esperance - but the nearest railhead is at Menzies, 180 km away on the Leonora-Kalgoorlie-Esperance line.
