Latvia is planning to increase last year's aggregate cargo handling volume of its seaports by 6-7% to around 65 mtpa this year and by 66% to 100mtpaby2025. Extensive work has already begun, including deepening of the ports' water areas. Funding for some of the projects has come from either private domestic investors or from dedicated EU funds. The privately run Baltic Coal Terminal (BCT), which has been handling Russian export coal at the Latvian Free Port of Ventspils since 2008, is looking to double its 2010 handling volume to 4 mt this year. By 2014, when BCT's second stage is scheduled to start operations, the terminal should be capable of handling 10.5 mtpa of coal.
