Mechel, one of Russia's largest steel and mining groups, is planning to expand the handling capacity of its Mechel-Temryuk port, Russia's southernmost harbour on the Sea of Azov, from the current 2 mtpa (mainly coal and coke) to 3.27 mtpa (including 3 mtpa of coal). Specifically, it would construct three new berths and additional storage capacities at the harbour, deepen its navigation canal and build an additional approach line to the port. While the project cost has not been disclosed, domestic market analysts estimate it at around US$20M-US$23M. Mechel acquired Temruyk port for US$6.1M in 2007. Since then, it has been using Temruyk's two berths (totalling 248m in length) for importing coking coal from its US-based Bluestone mine and supplying its Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey-based subsidiaries with Kuzbass-mined thermal coal. In 1H 2011, the port handled 644,200t of cargo, up 45.1% y/y.
