Soya buyers vote with their feet

European buyers of Brazilian cereals are reportedly looking to other markets to source consignments because of delays in their orders being delivered. Most of the grain bought by customers in Europe enters the continent via the port of Rotterdam, where queueing for a berth is virtually unheard of. In contrast, at the Port of Paranagua it's not unusual for a vessel to wait at anchorage for a month because of the lack of a berth. These delays, brought about by inadequate infrastructure, are resulting in European producers losing money. The French port of Montoir (Nantes-St Nazaire) handles 1.6 mtpa of soya flour from Brazil, equivalent to 70% of all Brazilian exports to France. Inbound consignments always arrive late.
