Russian presidentVladimir Putin has commissioned his cabinet to work out a plan for upgrading and developing the Trans-Siberian (Trans-Sib) and Baikal-Amur (BAM) railways. The plan would include associated infrastructure, such as new power-generating plants, transmission networks, seaports and rail approach lines. "When developingTransSib, we would aim to discover the immense potential of our country's eastern regions, help renew their industrial base and start exploiting new mineral deposits," said Putin.
