EMS wins Durres

Germany's EMS Shipping and Trading is extending its position in the Albanian port of Durres beyond container handling into the dry bulk sector, with the signing of a 35-year concession at the port's East Terminal by Albania's transport minister Sokol Olldashi and EMS's managing director Manfred Mueller. "We will invest several millions [of euros] to modernise the East Terminal, through EMS-Albanian Port Operator (EMS-APO)," stated Heiko Luikenga, EMS Group's founder and majority owner. "We will re-fence and re-pave the facility and modernise the equipment and offices. We are looking for a rapid programme to dredge the access channel from 7m to 11m to allow ships up to 55,000 dwt to call." Dredging is described as a priority project by Durres port authority and its consultant Hamburg Port Consulting. The project is estimated in the €10M-15M range.
