Worldwide sales of cement are forecast to expand at more than 5% per year, reaching 4.8 Btpa by 2017, a slight deceleration from the pace seen from 2007 to 2012, according to a recent study, World Cement Market, published by research company Freedonia. Following recent severe declines from 2008 to 2011, cement demand is expected to rebound sharply in North America and Western Europe. Eastern Europe was tipped to perform much better through to 2017 as well. However, the study was completed prior to the recent conflict in Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions imposed on Russia. How this will impact the cement market is yet to be ascertained.
