Shipboard grabs are normally mounted in highly exposed locations with little shelter from salt spray, meaning high levels of rust and corrosion. Despite many shipboard grabs being used infrequently - and thus operating hours and tonnage handled may be low - maintenance, if applied, is minimal and may amount to an irregular dab with a grease gun. Nonetheless this equipment is expected and required to work from the minute the hatches are opened. The grabs must also be suitable for a wide range of commodities with varying densities and dust generating potential.
