Of the UK's three main bulk cargoes, iron ore, coal and agri-bulks, only the latter shows any indication of a continued and stable level. Consumption remains broadly the same although the ratio of imports and exports varies due to weather and domestic harvesting performance. Demand for steel is looking more positive compared to the previous couple of years, mainly due to growing domestic car production and increased construction activities. However, the longer term outlook remains pessimistic, with steelmakers complaining of high energy costs that are making them uncompetitive, even against European rivals.
