Russia's federal authorities have finally approved the Lavna port project on the west of Kola Bay on the Barents Sea coast. Bids have been invited to design and build the 18 Mtpa port, which will serve as a rival to Murmansk, the country's only ice-free transpolar port. Under the tender conditions, the project is to be implemented within four to five years, with a price tag of around US$1.2B. Deep-sea terminals will be built, predominantly for handling coal, as well as some general and liquid cargoes. The port's initial capacity of 6 Mtpa is planned to first double and then treble by 2020.
