The papers in this issue of Built Environment reflect a wide ranging set of perspectives across Western and Eastern European cities on the development of knowledge and creative economies and the preconditions for their emergence. This is a timely issue as the European Commission is celebrating the Year of Creativity and Innovation (EP and CE, 2008) and the Committee of Regions is launching its Creativity Forum 'to showcase the creativity of Europe's regions and cities and to prove that creativity and innovation can be of key importance for a successful turn in economic development'.
