I would like to say that the concept for this special issue was conceived on a trip to one of the countries described by the authors, but unfortunately the idea was first muted while conducting fieldwork on a damp winter afternoon in Bolton in the north-west of England. The idea emerged while contemplating the many changes taking place within the planning system in England and Wales and the useful lessons which could be learned from advances in other countries which had faced similar issues of deregulation and financial constraints. The aim was to capture international approaches to crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) within the planning system, and to focus not just on countries well known for their advances in CPTED, but also on those where the concept is emerging and where lessons are still being learnt.
