For nearly 25 years, Herbert Girardet has been writing about the future of cities and planet Earth. In 1992, his Gaia Atlas of Cities provided new directions for sustainable urban living, in which he strongly advocated the need to make cities better places to live in and to reduce their impact on the planet, and this book was followed by others, including Creating Sustainable Cities (1999) and Cities, People, Planet (2004). In his latest book, Girardet presents a positive message for humanity by arguing for a restorative relationship between cities and natural systems, principally through a rapid transformation to renewable energy systems and the adoption of new lifestyle choices. He starts from the proposition that humanity is building an urban future, yet urbanization in its current form is threatening the future of humanity.
