Last month's Lightfair show in San Diego provided more evidence that lighting is the fastest moving technology in buildings. On its leading edge, the technology goes far beyond simple illumination. Manufacturers are fine-tuning LEDs and other solid-state lighting with improvements in dimming capability and flicker reduction. Many new LED options for replacing older lamps continue to appear, including candle-style LEDS that mimic lamps with visible filaments. Fixtures and luminaires offer enhanced control of glare, color quality and light distribution. Captivating luminous ceilings mimic daylight by changing their color temperature through the day. Some ceilings become a programmed canvas that depicts passing clouds in a blue sky. The tuning of solid-state lighting has potential not merely for occupant comfort but also for productivity, energy efficiency, well-being and even healing in healthcare facilities. Researchers are investigating the quality of lighting that is best for patients of various ages and afflictions.
