Last autumn, architect nick derbyshire experienced one of the worst fortnights of his life. First, Railtrack suddenly changed its mind about commissioning his practice to add a retail area to his award-winning work at Liverpool Street Station, then bosses at the practice's parent company, Gibb, steered a deteriorating relationship into a showdown over budgets. Derbyshire resigned. But stress bred determination, and one practice spawned another. Just three months old, six-strong Nick Derbyshire Architects has already been appointed to a £13m project for London Underground with Taywood Engineering. The man at the centre of all the drama seems unfazed; instead, he talks of the pleasure of heading his own firm: "It's fun; I wish I'd started my own practice years ago. When you're working late, it's nice to knowyou're doing it for yourself."
