Armitt wrong on airports. John Armitt states ("Blackouts would be the best possible thing that could happen", 10 January, page 22) that "the UK hasn't built a single full-length runway since the Second World War". This will come as a surprise to the owners of Manchester airport who spent £172m on a second full-length runway in 2001, let alone to Amec and Carillion who built it. Likewise whole new airports with new runways at East Midlands (1965), and even Gatwick (1958) are among a number of others.
