INFRASTRUCTURE SMART MOTORWAYS

Smart motorways are an ingenious way to squeeze an extra 33% capacity into our existing motorway network safely, economically and without impacting significantly on the environment. Underinvestment and growing traffic volumes in the Strategic Road Network (SRN) have led to significant congestion, currently estimated to cost the British economy £2bn a year. Certain areas of the SRN have already reached or exceeded capacity, particularly around larger cities.
