Michael Gove has made a big mistake in thinking that the £3-5bn is being spent on himself and his fellow parliamentarians ("Michael Gove joins opposition to £3.5bn parliament move", 20 January 2017, page 12). The money is to repair and upgrade a failing building that represents democracy to the world, which anybody visiting would appreciate and respect. Moving everybody out makes the works safer and easier to complete, and thus ultimately faster and cheaper. If he is so concerned about money spent during austerity, maybe he can suggest a cabinet-wide salary cut to align with average London pay, and only claim for exceptional expenses rather than allowable.
